The word ordination gets its name from the three traditional ministerial orders: deacons, priests, and bishops. Each one has its own ordination ceremony, although when most people think about ordination, they are usually thinking about ordination to the priesthood.

Protestant ministers are often ordained in a special ritual, but they do not call the ceremony a sacrament. Like Catholics, Orthodox clergy are ordained in a ceremony that they consider sacramental. Churches in the Anglican communion, such as the Episcopal Church, also regard ordination as a sacrament.

Many people who engage in ministry, even in the Catholic Church, are not ordained, although some are given a special commissioning ceremony, such as the commissioning of lectors and eucharistic ministers. Many Protestant ministers, especially those in smaller churches, do not have to be ordained to perform ministerial duties.

Although all churches have women involved in ministry, not all of them allow the ordination of women. Men and women who are in traditional religious orders, such as the Society of Jesus and the Sisters of Charity, enter the religious life though a profession of vows rather than an ordination.

The following videos show Catholic, Orhodox and Protestant ordinations. Each listing contains a descriptive heading, two lines of information, and a link to the video.
